Google Algorithm Change – 21 April 2015

Major Google Update launching worldwide on 21 April 2015

Google have been closely following the exponential growth in the use of smartphones to access the internet and announced in February 2015 that they will be releasing a major update to their search engine ranking algorithms to account for the significant and growing volume of mobile users searching the internet on their mobile devices.

Google have stated that…

As more people use mobile devices to access the internet, our algorithms have to adapt to these usage patterns….  Starting April 21, we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal. This change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact in our search results. Consequently, users will find it easier to get relevant, high quality search results that are optimized for their devices.

Over the next few weeks, we can expect to see a significant change in the search engine results for mobile users, offering web search results that are easy to access and use on smartphone devices.  Those websites which are not considered ‘mobile friendly’ by Google will loose ground in the search engines, in favour of mobile friendly sites!  This could have a major impact on many businesses that have not adopted a mobile marketing strategy.

What does it mean to be ‘mobile friendly’?

Palm of handGoogle has it’s own criteria to define what it considers to be a “mobile-friendly” website.
They have listed these as :
• Avoids software that is not common on mobile devices, like Flash
• Uses text that is readable without zooming
• Sizes content to the screen so users don’t have to scroll horizontally or zoom
• Places links far enough apart so that the correct one can be easily tapped

In essence, if a website is specifically formatted to be readable and usable on the smaller screen of a smartphone device, it will be considered ‘mobile friendly’ by Google.
